Troubleshooting guide

Why Is My Smoke Detector Chirping?

A periodic chirp is different from a full emergency alarm, but it still needs attention. The sound may indicate low backup power, end of life, a fault or another unit nearby.

First identify the sound

A single brief chirp at intervals often indicates maintenance; a repeating alarm pattern can indicate smoke or carbon monoxide. If you are unsure which you are hearing, prioritize safety: move outside and call 911. Never remove power simply to silence an unknown warning.

Find the actual unit

Sound reflects off walls and stairwells, so the nearest alarm is not always the source. Check every alarm, including CO units, basement devices and units behind closed doors. Look for an indicator light or display that matches the sound.

Common maintenance causes

Replaceable batteries may be low or improperly seated. A hardwired alarm may be reporting backup-battery trouble after an outage. An older unit may be giving its end-of-life signal. Dust or insects can also contribute to nuisance behavior.

When to stop troubleshooting

If a fresh, correctly installed battery does not resolve the chirp, the unit is near or past its replacement date, or access requires an unsafe ladder position, schedule service. Detector Inspectors can check every alarm so the problem is not shifted from one unit to another.
